A day with Ashley, and my new challenge

Liv picked the winner. And I’m so glad she did. Because of her, I was able to come across two of the most lovely individuals.  Truly.  Ashley, the uniquely gifted and petite model, mother, and wife. With her diverse, mixed-toned complexion, heaven knows how she landed her beautiful hazel eyes.  And Karla, the talented makeup and hair artist who decided to leave Los Angeles for the betterment of her family. Further more, I must admit my undying envy for her alluring accent stemming from the heart of New Zealand.

Lets discuss something important…just you and I.

I have had some diverting moments throughout the past week. Some might call it internally dramatic or somewhat compulsive, but I like to think otherwise. I spent too long in front of the computer looking at bigger strobes, newer equipment, trendy tools, and larger soft boxes. I was sick of my routine and I thought that the equipment I held might have been the problem. (Pshhhhh.  That’s like saying I would be a much better cook if I had expensive cookware.  Better pans don’t make a better cook.)

I was slapped in the face with the thoughts of a few incredibly talented gentleman who have helped me turn a new leaf.   A young talent, Joey L., taught me to stop investing in equipment, and to start investing in education.  There is also a prominent photographer who is widely known in the fashion industry who only uses a hand-held point and shoot camera.  That’s it.  (I would post his link but his photos are quite risky).  And then, through the magic of Chase Jarvis’s Creative Live, I watched Jeremy Cowart in action.  He taught me to utilize what I had, to think outside my box of uniform habits.

Experiment.  Challenge yourself.  And be creative.

And that’s exactly what I tried to do.  I used lights that I hardly ever operate.  I picked up linens and textures around the studio and used them for patterned and directive light on the model’s skin and for extra dramatics and mood.  And finally,  I utilized settings on my camera that I don’t usually dare to manipulate.  It might not look extremely different to you, but to me, I’m beside myself.  I can’t WAIT to do this again…then again….with new and “out-of-my-comfort-zone” intentions.

With that being said, I introduce to you, my new friend Ashley.  You beautiful and genuine creature.  There are big things ahead for you.  And Karla, her makeup is extraordinary.  Your art is a gift.  I can’t wait to work with you again my friend.

Little Nora: Welcome

Years ago, her mother gave birth at exactly 10:10pm to a beautiful, healthy, first born daughter. Today, I know her as my sister-in-law. Her unique rare beauty and unusual genuine character were strong magnets that my brother couldn’t resist. He pursued her to no end. He was absolutely head over heals for this sweet girl and admittedly, so was our family.

Love led to marriage. I’ve never known such a vibrant and beautiful couple. My camera was honored to take photos of their marriage, and thankfully, I was honored, just days ago, to photograph the belly. But that’s not all…

The snow was dumping, completely caked.  Some might have called it a nasty blizzard, but to me, it was a wonderland of white.  My sweet brother asked me to be there, and you better believe I was going to travel through anything to honor his request.  He handed me his camera, and we both did a nutty jig of excitement.  My baby brother was going to be a father.

I saw the story unfold through the lens of a videocamera.  Her pain, her tears, a caring husbands face, a loving sisters hand hold, and a future grandmother’s tearful  touch to help ease an anxious daughter.  She pushed, and cried, and pushed again.  Amidst her pain, she was brave and athletic yet still managed to make us laugh.    She pushed again.  Fought through more pain and looked to her husband for comfort.  He kissed her head, grabbed her hand, and lovingly encouraged her to push just one more time.

Cue my tears.

At exactly 10:10pm, Rachel and Layne met little Nora Noel.  A tiny little spirit joined us in the room, and without fail, I can’t help but feel the overwhelming presence of a higher power.  Birth is, and always will be, a miracle.   Her mother and father hugged as they celebrated life, and the birth of their first grand-daughter.  A caring mother-in-law wiped away tears as she counted all ten fingers.  A 16-year old fresh aunt yearned to meet her new niece.  A father-in-law then entered, and examined from afar as they examined the little one’s health.   And my baby brother held, loved, touched, and hugged his brand new baby girl.

No doubt, in her wedding dress, she was absolutely stunning.  In her maternity photos, she was utterly breathtaking.  But never, and I truly mean never, have I seen Rachel so naturally breathtaking and peacefully regal as I did when she held little Nora Noel for the first time.

Welcome to the world, little Nora.  I assure you, you will most definitely be loved.
