Lets discuss something important…just you and I.

I have had some diverting moments throughout the past week. Some might call it internally dramatic or somewhat compulsive, but I like to think otherwise. I spent too long in front of the computer looking at bigger strobes, newer equipment, trendy tools, and larger soft boxes. I was sick of my routine and I thought that the equipment I held might have been the problem. (Pshhhhh.  That’s like saying I would be a much better cook if I had expensive cookware.  Better pans don’t make a better cook.)

I was slapped in the face with the thoughts of a few incredibly talented gentleman who have helped me turn a new leaf.   A young talent, Joey L., taught me to stop investing in equipment, and to start investing in education.  There is also a prominent photographer who is widely known in the fashion industry who only uses a hand-held point and shoot camera.  That’s it.  (I would post his link but his photos are quite risky).  And then, through the magic of Chase Jarvis’s Creative Live, I watched Jeremy Cowart in action.  He taught me to utilize what I had, to think outside my box of uniform habits.

Experiment.  Challenge yourself.  And be creative.

And that’s exactly what I tried to do.  I used lights that I hardly ever operate.  I picked up linens and textures around the studio and used them for patterned and directive light on the model’s skin and for extra dramatics and mood.  And finally,  I utilized settings on my camera that I don’t usually dare to manipulate.  It might not look extremely different to you, but to me, I’m beside myself.  I can’t WAIT to do this again…then again….with new and “out-of-my-comfort-zone” intentions.

With that being said, I introduce to you, my new friend Ashley.  You beautiful and genuine creature.  There are big things ahead for you.  And Karla, her makeup is extraordinary.  Your art is a gift.  I can’t wait to work with you again my friend.

But here’s one of my favorite parts.  Before the client shows up, it’s essential for me to nail my lighting.  Back light, paper light, exposure, fill light, etc.  And of course, I need subjects.  I can’t tell you how many pictures I have of these two goofs.  These nut boys are also known as the B Roll Production team…and they’re also my brothers.  (I know, the maturity level runs in the family)  As I’m focusing on the technical side of things, I’m sure they are most bored of being my test boys so they ham it up on a regular basis.  It isn’t until later while I’m culling through photos that I get to enjoy their ridiculous posing and most lovable personalities….and more than likely, I’m laughing hysterically to myself.
